Somewhere along the way, you may have gotten an email or a sales pitch saying your website "fails Core Web Vitals" and you need to fix it immediately. Maybe you ran a speed test, got a wall of red numbers and acronyms, and closed the tab in defeat. Fair enough — this stuff was designed by and for engineers.
But the underlying ideas are genuinely simple, and they matter to your business: Google uses these measurements as one factor in deciding where your site shows up in search results, and customers use them instinctively — a slow, jumpy website quietly costs you calls. Here's what each term actually means, what the numbers should look like, and what you can realistically do about it.
The 30-Second Version
Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to answer three questions about your website:
- Does it load fast? (Largest Contentful Paint)
- Does it respond when you tap something? (Interaction to Next Paint)
- Does the page jump around while loading? (Cumulative Layout Shift)
That's it. Everything else — the lab scores, the color coding, the scary audit reports — is detail layered on top of those three questions.
Why Google Cares (and Why You Should)
Google's job is to send searchers to websites they'll have a good experience with. A page that takes six seconds to load on a phone, or that shifts the "Call Now" button just as someone taps it, frustrates people — and frustrated people blame the search that sent them there.
So Google measures these things and uses them as a ranking tiebreaker of sorts. Important context: Core Web Vitals are not the biggest factor in rankings. A slower site with genuinely helpful content will usually still outrank a fast site with thin content. But when two local businesses have similar content and reviews, the one with the better-performing website has an edge — and in a tight local market, edges matter.
The more direct reason to care: your customers. Research consistently shows that people abandon slow websites quickly, and every extra second of load time loses you a chunk of visitors. For a local service business where most traffic comes from phones — often on cellular connections, often from someone standing in front of a broken water heater — speed isn't a technical nicety. It's whether you get the call or your competitor does.
The Three Vitals, One by One
1. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): "How fast does the main stuff appear?"
LCP measures how long it takes for the largest element on the screen — usually your hero image, headline, or main photo — to fully appear after someone clicks your link.
- Good: 2.5 seconds or less
- Needs improvement: 2.5 to 4 seconds
- Poor: more than 4 seconds
Think of it as the moment a visitor stops staring at a blank or half-loaded screen and starts actually seeing your page. The most common culprits on local business websites are oversized photos (a 5-megabyte image straight from a phone camera), slow or cheap web hosting, and too many third-party scripts loading before your content does.
2. Interaction to Next Paint (INP): "Does the page respond when I tap it?"
INP measures responsiveness: when a visitor taps your menu, your phone number, or your booking button, how long before the page visibly reacts? (This replaced an older metric called First Input Delay in 2024, so you may still see FID mentioned in older reports.)
- Good: 200 milliseconds or less
- Needs improvement: 200 to 500 milliseconds
- Poor: more than 500 milliseconds
A half-second doesn't sound like much, but on a tap it feels like the page ignored you — so people tap again, and again, and then leave. Poor INP usually comes from too much JavaScript running on the page: chat widgets, pop-up tools, sliders, tracking scripts, and bloated page-builder plugins all competing for the phone's attention at once.
3. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): "Does the page jump around?"
CLS measures visual stability. You've experienced this: you go to tap a link, an ad or image loads a split-second later, everything shifts down, and you tap the wrong thing. Maddening — and Google quantifies it with a score:
- Good: 0.1 or less
- Needs improvement: 0.1 to 0.25
- Poor: more than 0.25
Common causes on small business sites: images without defined dimensions (the browser doesn't know how much space to reserve), embedded maps or review widgets that load late, and pop-ups or banners that shove content down after the page appears done.
How to Check Your Own Site (Free, Two Minutes)
You don't need to hire anyone to find out where you stand:
- Go to PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) and enter your website address.
- Look at the top section first — it shows real user data (labeled "what real users are experiencing") if your site gets enough traffic. This is what Google actually uses. Check both mobile and desktop, but care more about mobile.
- The lower section is a lab simulation — useful for diagnosing problems, but the real-user numbers are the ones that count.
If your site is too small to have real-user data, use the lab scores as your guide, and check your most important pages individually — your homepage, your main service pages, and your contact page matter far more than an old blog post.
What You Can Fix Yourself vs. What Needs a Pro
Often fixable without a developer:
- Shrink your images. This is the single most common problem and the easiest fix. Resize photos to the size they actually display (usually under 1,500 pixels wide) and compress them with a free tool before uploading. This alone fixes many LCP problems.
- Delete what you don't use. Old plugins, widgets you forgot about, the live-chat tool you never staffed — every one of them slows your site and hurts INP.
- Remove autoplay sliders. Image carousels are heavy, visitors rarely click past the first slide, and they're a classic cause of both LCP and CLS issues. One strong static image with a clear headline converts better anyway.
- Upgrade bargain hosting. If your site is on the cheapest shared plan available, moving to a decent host is often a $15–30/month upgrade with outsized speed benefits.
Usually needs a developer or your web person:
- Minifying and deferring JavaScript, or fixing a bloated theme/page-builder
- Setting up proper caching and a content delivery network (CDN)
- Reserving space for embedded maps and third-party widgets to fix CLS
- Font-loading optimizations
When you talk to a developer, you don't need to speak jargon. Show them your PageSpeed report and say: "I want the real-user numbers green on mobile, starting with the homepage and my service pages. What's the biggest bang for the buck?"
Keep Perspective
A few honest caveats before you obsess:
- Don't chase a perfect 100 score. The lab score fluctuates with every test and includes factors beyond the three vitals. "Green" real-user vitals on your key pages is the goal, not a trophy number.
- Content and reviews still matter more. A blazing-fast website with thin content and no Google reviews won't rank. Core Web Vitals are a multiplier on good fundamentals, not a substitute for them.
- Fix it once, then check quarterly. Speed isn't a project you redo monthly. Get your key pages into the green, then spot-check every few months — especially after adding new plugins, photos, or features.
